The Delhi Sultanate
The Delhi Sultanate refers to the five short-lived Muslim kingdoms of Turkic and Pashtun (Afghan) origin that ruled the territory of Delhi between 1206 and 1526 CE. In the 16th century, the last of their line was overthrown by the Mughals, who established the the Mughal Empire in India.
Mohammad Gauri came to India and conquered most north Indian regions. In the First battle of tarain, Prithiviraj Chauhan defeated Mohammad Gauri. But in second Battle of Tarain Prithiviraj Chauhan was defeated by Mohammad Gauri. He appointed Qutubuddin aibak who was slave of Gauri to rule the north Indian states.
1. Mamluk (Slave) dynasty :
a) Qutubuddin aibak was the founder of this dynasty. He set up his capital at Lahore. He also established Qutub Minar, Qutub Mosque in Delhi and Adhai Din ka Jhopda in Ajmer. He died playing polo. After him, his son-in-law Illtutmish took over the thrown.
b) Illtutmish - He started the Turk-e-Chalgahi and Iqta System. Two types of coins were launched as his time tankas (made up of silver) and Jittal (made up of copper).Mongols under Chengiz khan also invaded India at his time of reign. He ordered to complete the Qutub Minar.
c) Razia Sultan - She was the daughter of Illtutmish and the first woman ruler of Delhi Sultanate. She launched the parda na karna system.
d) Balban - He finished the Turk-e-chalgahi system. He has famous poets in his court like Amir Khosrow .
